John D. Macarthur Beach State Park

Wednesday, January 2, 2013

Our neighbor, Barry, needed to take his guitar to West Palm Beach to have some minor repairs, so Barry and Susan asked us if we wanted to ride along.  Without any hesitation, we said "when do we leave!"  We gladly got in Barry's SUV and headed out of Ancient Oaks RV Resort on to highway 710 to West Palm Beach.

The last time we were in West Palm Beach, we had lunch at the Gulf Stream Bristo.  Since the repair shop was only minutes away and it was close to lunch time, we all agreed to have lunch there again.  Barry dropped off his guitar and the car began steering itself to the Bristo.  It's so good there, even the car likes it!

After getting our fill of the wonderful fresh seafood, we headed north towards John D. MacArthur Beach State Park.  The Park is located in North Palm Beach and is only minutes from the Bristo. The 325-acre park is named after the previous owner John D. MacArthur who donated the land for use as a public park.  A 1600 foot boardwalk spans the estuarine system in Lake Worth.  At low tide, you can see roseate spoonbills, white ibis, herons, and egrets browse for prey.  Of course, we didn't see any of that since we got there at high tide.  Hey! Nobody told me!

The Park is also a prime nesting place for seniors...I mean sea turtles!  Large numbers of loggerhead, green and leatherback turtles nest here from early May through August.  Of course, we didn't see any of that stuff since we were here in January!

Ok, ok, our timing was off a little bit, but that didn't stop us.  It was  beautiful January day in South Florida, the sun was shinning, the birds were singing, and the air was fresh and clean.  This is a great park to visit any time of the year!  It's really cool to walk on the boardwalk across Lake Worth and enjoy the birds and sea life.  Once we crossed Lake Worth, it was only a few more steps through the mangroves to the beach.

Here we are entering the park.  L to R: Barry, Craig & Susan

This place is for the birds! Ha!
