The US Army Corps of Engineers built a series of locks and dams called the Okeechobee Water Way which connects Florida's east coast to it's west coast. It's a great way for boating enthusiasts to travel from coast to coast without having to go all the way around the Florida Keys. The Okeechobee Water Way has three campgrounds for public use. One on the east end of the water way, one in the middle of the water way, and one on the west end of the water way.
We are spending three nights at Ortona South Campground located near the middle of the Okeechobee Water Way. It is located about 38 miles east of Fort Myers, and about 20 miles west of Lake Okeechobee on State Route 80.
Kallie decided to rest. I think she got tired after watching us set up camp!

This is a view from the fishing dock of the Caloosahachee River looking toward the West.
Most of the campsites here are just like this one. All sites have a paved pad and all of the roads are paved.
This creek drains into the river and is the home of a family of otters.
Speaking of otters, these guys just passed by our campsite.
As you can see from this next group of pictures, there are all kinds of boats traveling on this water way. We enjoy watching them pass by as they get ready to lock through on their trip across Florida. This is just a few of the many boats we saw during our three days here.
From this location, you can enjoy the sun rise and the sun set! This evening the sky is alive with colors!
We really enjoy staying here for a few days. In addition to the variety of boats, there's a variety of birds, a few armadillos, otters, gators, and some very friendly campers. Oh, did mention a great BBQ place in LaBelle called the Log Cabin? We always make several trips to the Log Cabin when we stay at Ortona South Campground!
