The Villages and a Car Show

Thursday, May 16, 2014

We have hooked up the camper and are heading out of Okeechobee, Florida on a nine day excursion that will take us to the north east corner of Florida and down Florida's east coast line.  Our first stop will be in The Villages to see our good friends Glen and Laura for three days.

We are staying at Santos State Park, one of Florida's newest state park camping facilities.  It is also the trail head for Santos Trail.  Here is Kallie checking out our campsite.

We always enjoy going to The Villages.  It's a very interesting, beautiful place with lots of activities for seniors, and we always have a great time with Glen and Laura.  Glen and I played a little golf and had some practice swings and a local driving range while Laura and Kitty spent some time at one of the many swimming pools for some exercise.

This weekend, The Spanish Village is having their monthly car show.  There are all types of cars here, and we really enjoyed some of the cars that date back to our childhood days.  So, let's take a look some of our favorites.

My folks had a 1955 Chevy just like this one only it was yellow instead of blue.  The car we had was a lemon and it was always in the shop getting something fixed.  All of us kids will never forget when our mom tried to back out of the garage and had the gear shift in Drive instead of Reverse.  She pushed the wall of the garage out about 18 inches but there was hardly a scratch on the car!  They built car like tanks back then!

The classic 1957 Chevy!  My friend had one and we always enjoyed riding in it.

This is a 1964 Avanti made by Studebaker.  My buddy took me for a spin in an Avanti one summer day.  It was quite a thrill ride.  I am sure the owner had no idea how fast this car would go, but we did!

The classic Thunderbird.  Kitty's mom had one of these and she let Kitty drive a good part of the way out to California and back.  Not much room in the back seat, but when your a teenager, who cares!

Well that wraps up our visit to The Villages.  We will depart here and head to Talbot Island State Park near Jacksonville, Florida for the next four days.  We plan to see a little history, a light house, and visit some really great beaches!
